Word to the wise... DON'T TAKE SMALL CHILDREN CAMPING IN RECORD HEAT. We didn't plan it that way, but if you're taking kids camping, know when to quit.

We just came back from 2 nights camping on the Eastern Shore. We had a great camp site and the big kids did great setting up camp. We brought 2 hammocks, and those were the biggest hit of the weekend, the kids loved them.

The trouble started when we tried to out them to bed at about 8PM, after 4 trips to the bathroom. They didn't go to sleep until about 10PM when the whole family was finally in the tent. Amazingly they woke up in a decent mood and we made it to the beach. The beach is cool, they have a bunch of concrete ships partially sunk and filled that they use as a breakwater. It makes for a unique view and a wonderful calm beach for the kids.

Since the baby is not quite old enough for sunscreen or bug spray, we have a little tent for her. She took a little nap, and we took turns sitting on the beach with her during her nap. She did go in the water for a little while and she absolutely loved it.

After we went back to the campsite and had lunch and took showers it really started to get hot. After a short little walk, Leah and Nathan were both a little glassy-eyed, and started on their way to dehydration and heat exhaustion, so we took an afternoon ride, and then an evening ride out to dinner. We got Buddy rehydrated and found this wonderful tavern (it reminded us of the Mucky Duck in Monterey) with outstanding food. Since it was about 100 degrees out, the kids didn't go to sleep until 9:30. It was supposed to be hot again Sunday, so we gave up. Instead of going to the beach and taking our time getting home, we packed up before it got really hot again and came home. It took us a while to get unpacked, and to try and get the AC working in the house. This turned out to be a REALLY GOOD choice, as it was over 100 degrees.
We all survived our trip, and no one got sick... but next time we go camping, I am really hoping it is not as hot.
